Landscape Architect by day, curator of Shit Gardens by night.
Despite designing aesthetically pleasing landscapes for a living, and teaching design at the University of Melbourne, Bede finds himself most at home going on long walks around the suburbs of Melbourne. On these walks, he pays attention to the way weeds so beautifully reclaim forgotten spaces, notices the peculiar things people have chosen to do in their front yards, and seeks out examples of unique design experimentation in the home garden.
When Bede began collaborating with his quick-witted and altogether hilarious friend James Hull, Shit Gardens was born. A way for us to chuckle together over these suburban curiosities, it quickly became a platform for us to share them with many others, culminating in a book we are both highly proud of - Shit Garden: a celebration not a condemnation
