Lamont “Voice” Cox is a poet, spoken word artist, writer, director, event host, motivational speaker and “self-proclaimed” urban philosopher from Kinston, NC. Early in his career, he earned the name Voice when he was asked for his stage name and had to admit that he did not have one. The staff in charge of participant registration could not fathom the thought of a poet without a stage name. Because his voice was so deep, sultry and commanding, they dubbed him Voice. His fans loved the name and before long, “Voice” had taken on a life of its own. He has participated in several film projects, plays and poetry slams. His internet show, Voice of the People, was the first of its kind produced in Kinston. It showcased local talent and addressed issues affecting the community. Voice was also one third of the blog talk radio show “The 3Gs.” The show was designed to discuss a variety of hot topics and gave fans an opportunity to call in and voice their opinions. In February of 2016, Voice led an effort in Kinston that helped to deliver over 3,000 cases of water to residents living with contaminated water in Flint, Michigan. He was honored with an MLK Humanitarian Award for that project.
