Paul F Torrence

Paul F. Torrence is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. He received his Bachelors of Science degree from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and a PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was employed for 30 years as a research chemist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where he became a section chief before departing for an eight year stay at Northern Arizona University where he was a department chair and held simultaneous appointments as a full investigator at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson. Dr. Torrence has published more than 200 scientific papers and edited four books in the fields of his specialties, which include medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, and drug discovery.

During Dr. Torrence’s career, he has worked on research and cancer, human immunodeficiency virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and smallpox biodefense with grant support from the National Institutes of Health, the State of Arizona, the United States Army Institute of Infectious Diseases, and NATO.

He has been active in conservation for many years, including the organization of advocacy efforts for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and working for the Northern Alaska Environmental Center in 1995. He was a pro bono consultant to the Navajo Nation in an effort to prevent the use of recycled wastewater on sacred lands. From 2009 to 2016, he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Wilderness Land Trust.
