From early childhood in Brooklyn, NY, to Catholic elementary school on Long Island, and high school and beyond George has led a unique and interesting life that included such diverse experiences as serving as the first dean of Austin (Texas) Community College, running marathons, marrying, divorcing, and remarrying his first wife, writing and performing sketch comedy and standup, working for Shell Oil in Nigeria and as a Technical writer and editor for Dell Computers, General Electric R&D, and at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory and not least of all, sharing his life with 'Bobbi'.
George worked in business, industry, and education. While at General Electric's Global Research Center he was awarded a patent for an automated proposal development and production process as well as bonus awards for streamlining training programs. He also worked as a Technical Editor at the Knowles Atomic Power Laboratory editing the Operating Manuals for the U.S. nuclear submarine fleet.
Prior to those positions, he worked for Radian International, an environmental engineering firm, where he coordinated the writing, editing, and production of proposals for submission to government, private, and foreign clients. During his tenure there, he was responsible for the acquisition of more than $100M in contracts. He also coordinated the design and implementation of web sites for Radian clients as well as playing a major role in the development of the company's external (Internet) and internal (Intranet) web sites.
Before joining Radian, he spent more than 10 years writing and editing end-user documentation and computer supported training for companies like Dell Computers, IBM, and the Shell Petroleum Corporation. He also prepared accounting software documentation and authored newspaper and magazine articles, wrote trade books, texts, and reference manuals, and won awards for his marketing brochures and fliers.
His web-based writing and editing service, www.drwrite.com, provides editing support to the U.S. Army's Environmental Command Division as well as occasional work for other clients. Dr. Wilkerson taught classes on-line for a number of schools, including Southern New Hampshire University and Columbia State Community College where he is currently an adjunct faculty member.
During the above time, George also 'presented' as Bobbi Williams, and served as Director of Rainbow Access Initiative, Inc. She successfully obtained 501(c) status for that organization and developed their web site into the most comprehensive and useful LGBT health education and training resource on the web at that time. She served as a board member of the National LGBT Cancer Network and on the Steering Committees of the National Coalition for LGBT Health, the New York State Dignity for All Students (DASA) Coalition, and the GENDA Strategic Planning group.
Bobbi was frequently called upon to speak and/or make presentations on LGBT health issues. She was a guest lecturer at colleges and universities and presented at the LGBTI Health Summit, the Southern Comfort convention, the Transcending Boundaries Conference (at Yale University), the New York State Geriatric Mental Health Association, the Mohawk Hudson Planned Parenthood LGBT Teen Group, the Eastern United States LGBT Conference at SUNY University at Albany, and the International Foundation for Gender Education (IFGE).
Publications under her name include newspaper and magazine articles, textbooks, trade books, reference manuals, and fiction. In October of 2001, her collection of Short Stories "Me and Bobbi and the Gyrls," was published followed in 2009 by her novel, "Transfixed" and most recently, her memoir, "(You Don't Know) The Half of It".
Bobbi has been 'out' to most of her friends, family, and co-workers for nearly thirty years; her work has been accepted without regard for her gender identity.
