David Gallagher

J. David Gallagher, Ph. D. is Associate Professor of Education in the Division of Education at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY. Gallagher teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in adolescent literacy, literacy leadership, and methods for teaching and learning in secondary schools.

Dr. Gallagher presents at regional and national conferences on literacy and educational research, and has published journal articles and book chapters on related topics. Some of his publications include: “Adolescent Literacy Development and the New Literacies: Challenges and Possibilities,” & “Being a ‘reader’ in New Times: A Case Study Examining the Construction of a ‘Reader’ in a Ninth-Grade English Class.” With general research interests in adolescent literacy and learning, Gallagher’s current research examines disciplinary literacy, project-based learning, and the use of TED Talks to develop students’ writing, presentation skills, and multiliteracies.

An avid volleyball player, Gallagher is joining his love of volleyball and literacy with a new book, Court Notes: A Volleyball Journal, co-authored with Richard Kent, Ph. D. The athlete’s journal is for middle and high school volleyball players and includes reflective writing prompts to help students become “students of the game.”
