Prior to this book, Richard W. Garrett's most significant publication (coauthored
with Dr. John R. Virts) was an article in the Harvard Business Review
titled: Weighing Risk in Capacity Expansion.
Garrett is a trained industrial engineer, BS and MS (Purdue), and has a PhD
in operations research (Northwestern University). He has twenty-seven years
of business experience with Eli Lilly and Company, a large pharmaceutical
company. Beginning in 1994, having retired from Lilly, he was an associate
clinical professor at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University,
Bloomington, and during the same period, he was a partner in a consulting
firm.
During his six and one-half years at IU, he won an award for the most innovative
new course in the MBA program. During ten years of his working career,
he served as an accreditor of engineering departments around the country
through ABET.
During his years at Eli Lilly, he was one of the corporate leaders in the use of
the Total Quality process-the process used in this study. He has facilitated
approximately sixty long-range plans for nonprofit groups in central Indiana.
