Marcela Magda Popa M.D.

Marcela Magda Popa, M.D. is a Board Certified Internal Medicine physician who graduated in 1989 from Carol Davilla Medical School in Bucharest, Romania and completed the Internal Medicine residency training in the United States in1996. After sixteen years in private practice, her autoimmune arthritis forced her into early retirement.

Being a doctor and a patient at the same time helped her notice very unusual things; farfetched associations triggered her attention after initial dismissals; and made her further explore the available information about numerous substances classified as "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS), and considered "inert" or "inactive." After an extensive specialty literature research and long "self-experimentation," she recalled and was able to retrospectively explain not only many of her symptoms, but similar unexpected symptoms that some patients had reported to her over the years in practice.

Thus, Dr. Popa figured out she wasn't an isolated case, but didn't have the means to conduct medical studies in order to verify her point. Being unable to ignore many atypical incidents that happened to her, and moreover, being unable to ignore the benefits she achieved from avoiding certain "safe" chemical components, she decided to share her observations in her book, Keep Away from GRAS. This information can be useful to other people struggling with situations similar to the ones she conquered with her new knowledge.

Probably, many readers will start paying attention to details that nobody pointed out until now and would notice if anything better happens if they follow the steps she did. Conceivably, patients' awareness of the inactive ingredients being responsible for some unusual side-effects, would make them more comfortable in revealing them.

If many other patients report improvements in their conditions, the author hopes that some specialists and researchers may find her observations to have more validity and may consider further pursuing them in medical studies. And if a solid answer can be derived from such studies, the quality of life for many people would improve tremendously.
