Ed Weyhing

Announcing award: Feathered Quill Short Stories, 3rd place 2018.

Ed Weyhing (1937-2016) was born in Plasterco, Virginia, and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. His two big sisters taught him to read before he went to school, and during World War II he followed the maps of battles in the daily newspaper, and read “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.”

He was an avid sports fan, following baseball, football, and basketball intensively. For himself and his friends he invented and constructed a cardboard all-star baseball game before such a game was commercially available – and he used a slide rule to compute each player’s averages.

That arduous but absorbing activity later led him to degrees in math, and to becoming a founder of a computer software company. When the company was sold, Ed was able to retire young and start writing fiction.

He was always moved by witnessing people bravely struggling against tough odds, and that theme shows up repeatedly in his novel and in his stories.
