Sarah L Drury

Sarah is a writer based in North Lincolnshire, where she lives in a little, cluttered flat full of pretty things she finds in the charity shops! And books loitering in every room, some read, some half-read, and some in 'to read' piles! She lives with her teenage son who has autism. She has a quiet life. She is either writing poetry, painting, or listening to Yuja Wang playing Rachmaninov's piano concertos!

Sarah has Bachelor of Education degree from Manchester Metropolitan University, and has just completed a Master's Degree in creative writing (with poetry as her main genre.) She plans on studying for a PhD, part-time over the next six years, with an emphasis on ekphrastic poetry (poetry as a response to art). As part of her MA final poetry collection, she included five ekphrastic poems, in response to artworks by Van Gogh, Banksy, Tracey Emin, Frida Kahlo and Yayoi Kusama.

She is a versatile poet, writing about many themes in many different styles. Her poetry is eclectic. Her latest book, Glimpses, available on Amazon, is a collection which will move you, enthuse you, enchant you, and absorb you in a world of magic, love, emotions, life, family, and relationships, in her unique, irrevocably inimitable style. Packed with romance, mermaids, moon magic, lovers, snow angels, daffodils, swifts, tea at the Ritz and much more, you will treasure the sentimentality of the poetry.

She writes performance poetry based on political and societal themes, and performs regularly at local poetry readings and spoken word events. She has been the support act for several professional performance poets including Jim Higo and J.B. Barrington. She founded 'Speak Out Scunny', a monthly spoken word event in Scunthorpe. Her Master's dissertation was a collection of mental health poetry reflecting on her experiences of being an inpatient in psychiatric hospitals. It is heavily metaphorical and contemporary in style, rather surrealist. She is going to spend some time writing a new collection, perhaps based on autism. There is also a new memoir in the pipeline, though that will be a while yet!

She has been published in a variety of online and print publications including an anthology by Bent Key Publications called 'Ey 'Up' and has appeared several times in Misfit Magazine. A poem she had written about an experience with a refugee's mistreatment in the hospital, titled 'An Immigrant Dared to Sing' was shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize in 2022. 'The Stars Do Not Concern Me', a surreal and shocking mental health poem, was shortlisted for the Creative Future Writers' Award in September, 2023.
