Allison Yates

Allison Yates is a freelance writer specializing in travel, society and women who often reports on the U.S. Midwest, Ibiza, Spain and Latin America.

Her articles have appeared in Ozy, Atlas Obscura, Culture Trip, Chicken Soup for the Soul anthologies, Sunseeker, The Billfold, Almost Fearless, The Wisdom Daily, Taste.Company, Bloom Magazine, Limestone Post Magazine and more. She currently inspires future travelers as a guide writer for GoOverseas.com and formerly debunked sexual health myths as a former blogger for Kinsey Confidential, a publication of the Kinsey Institute for Sex, Gender and Reproduction.

Allison believes all people should be free, fulfilled and able to express their identities—and this vision inspires her work. Since graduating from Indiana University with a degree focused on human rights in Latin America, Allison has lived and worked in Spain and Australia and traveled to more than 20 countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, Oceania and Latin America. She’s worked as everything from a driving instructor to a uranium mine cleaner and believes these diverse experiences add depth to her writing. She also once forced (not quite forced, but highly encouraged) her university to buy batches of homemade pumpkin donuts to fund a trip to Panama.

She now splits her time between Chicago and everywhere else. She spent several weeks in San Diego, California, where she recently volunteered with undocumented workers and wrote about border issues.
