F. Tyler Sergent, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of History and General Studies at Berea College, KY. A medieval historian, Tyler's research and teaching areas include western religious history (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), Christian monastic history & spirituality, Viking Age and medieval Scandinavian history & religion, contemporary religious extremism in the U.S., and Appalachian culture & history. Originally from West Virginia, he studied in Tennessee, Michigan, Minnesota, and Denmark. Tyler's social and political activism centers on racial justice & equality, immigrant rights, gender equality, and LGBTQIA fairness.
