I married Barb Van Dyk in 1985. We have 3 children.

I was ordained as a minister of the Christian Reformed Church in 1991, went into the US Navy as a chaplain in 1995, deploying into combat zones in 2000, 2003, and 2004. I returned to parish ministry in 2007, and since February 2017 serve as a chaplain in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
