T.M. Hayes is a retired aquarist and marine aquarium writer. He is the author of more than 200 magazine articles on the various aspects of reef aquariums and has at one time or another written for virtually every major English-speaking aquarium magazine in the UK and the US and also had articles published in France, Italy, and Germany.
He was a major contributor and editorial consultant on the book 500 Ways To Be A Better Marine Fishkeeper (2005) and has written and developed a training course for marine aquarists aimed at both professionals and hobbyists.
In connection with his writing he has given presentations at hobbyist conferences in the UK, the USA, Germany, France, Croatia, and the Czech Republic and at conferences for the zoo and aquarium industry in the UK and at an international level in Holland.
As an aquarist he has had a number of notable successes in breeding tropical marine species, fishes and invertebrates, some of which have rarely, if ever, been bred before.
Since writing Aquatical Latin he has turned his hand to writing fiction under the name Tim Hayes, mostly in the urban fantasy genre.
An ongoing urban fantasy series is in the works. He's tentatively referring to it as the Wheel of the Year Sequence. It’s an urban fantasy set in contemporary times and, in a similar vein to series such as The Dresden Files, The Rivers of London, and A Discovery of Witches, depicts a world where magic and the supernatural are real but hidden away from the majority of the population. Largely set in the UK, much of the narrative is centred on London, along with excursions to various locations around the country.
Tim has recently self-published a novel entitled How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List. It was written during the course November 2025 for the Novel November challenge. This is the first of his works to take the form of an eBook, it's also available in print on Amazon.
