Mr. Bergsgaard began writing novels and short stories after he retired with over thirty years in law enforcement where he served as a Special Agent with the U. S. Treasury Department and Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. He served in numerous capacities, investigating financial crimes, both national and international, covert and undercover operations, surveillance and wiretaps, high risk arrests and tactical operations. He brings those experiences to his crime novels, sharing insights only an experienced agent can deliver. As one critic wrote, "There are many authors who dream of being cops. Few do. There are many cops who strive to write. Few can. L. D. Bergsgaard is the rear exception of a street hardened cop who can write like a poet."
Because writing such be fun if not profitable, L. D. (AKA: Larry) has ventured into writing short stories and cozy mysteries. His Where the Best Began is a "collection of short stories from a ten-year old boy's eyes with the interpretation of sixty year off man...the author sustains a childlike perception of a beguiling but bewildering adult reality ...appealing to the reader nostalgic for a time of childhood innocence in the real American lifestyle of the 1950's. Bergsgaard's writing is suggestive of an oral storyteller with impeccable timing and taste..." Kirkus Review.
Write what you know has been Mr. Bergsgaard's intent. He was raised in a small town and his Pelican Falls Chronicles captures the essence of the wonderment and excitement of the fictional village of Pelican Falls. Pastor Kathy, the heroine of those cozy mysteries, is a lovable and captivating character surrounded by even more eccentric and sometimes outlandish friend and neighbors.
Living in the Sonoran Desert spawned a historical novel, Barzel, following a destitute youngster through the most horrible of circumstances in the Old West. The Saguaro Murders is the first in a series of crime mysteries following a most noble deputy, Angel Lopez who learns sometimes the toughest battles are not with the 'bad guys,' but with his own.
And most recently, Mr. Bergsgaard has published a collection of short stories entitled Tumbleweeds and captures amusing and dramatic tales from West of the Missouri.
