Sarah Carey

Sarah Carey holds a master’s degree in English from FSU with a

concentration in creative writing. A Pushcart and Orison prize nominee, her

poems have appeared or are forthcoming in numerous literary journals,

including Gulf Coast, Five Points, Rattle, Sugar House Review, the Florida

Review, and many others. Her debut full-length collection of poems, *The

Grief Committee Minutes*, (2024, Saint Julian Press) was an Eric Hoffer

Award finalist. Her next collection, *Bloodstream*, was released in 2026 from

Mercer University Press. Sarah is also the author of two poetry chapbooks,

*Accommodations *(2019, Concrete Wolf Press) winner of the Concrete Wolf

Chapbook Award, and *The Heart Contracts*(2016, Finishing Line Press.)

Her professional career includes 35 years at the University of Florida

College of Veterinary Medicine, where she was the college’s first director

of communications and worked until her retirement in May 2025. Prior to

that, she worked as editor of a weekly newspaper in the Florida Panhandle,

as editor of an agricultural trade magazine, not to mention years of

copywriting, waitressing, and department store sales to support her college

education.

Sarah writes about loss of all kinds, about family relationships and

understanding identity through the prisms of many types of landscapes, both

physical and emotional. Key themes in her work include memory,

environmental impact on animal and human life, place and our relationship

to it, and the passage of time.

"I write poems in an effort to bring meaning and memory to everyday

experiences as well as to attempt to connect the personal to the universal

in some small way," she says. "I also write for the satisfaction and

gratification that comes with the ways in which language can surprise and

change us through the creative process."
