He remains an active committee member, now serving as news editor of ASBPE’S quarterly ethics newsletter. In 2002, he was the recipient of ASBPE’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Howard's first book, Get Serious About Competitive Editorial Analysis, was published in 2012. It details his approach to applying quantitative assessment of qualitative factors involved in news, features, graphics, debut issues, and post-show coverage.

In June 2017, Howard followed up his first book with a sequel, Get Serious About Editorial Management. In this work, he shows how to use quantitative analysis to achieve success as an editorial manager.
