Jim Johnston was born in New York. He studied architecture at the University of Virginia and graphic design at the School of Visual Arts before embarking on a professional career as a fine artist. Working in a variety of media, including painting, ceramics, printmaking, as well as furniture and commercial product design, his work has been exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Europe and Japan.
His second career, as a professional writer, began with his book Mexico City: An Opinionated Guide for the Curious Traveler. Published in 2007, it received excellent reviews and has been in print in several editions. Since then he has worked as a freelance journalist while continuing to make art. Johnston has lived in Mexico since 1996, becoming a Mexican citizen in 2005.
