A photograph inspired me to create the drama series Land Girls (BBC). The photo showed two elderly women - former Land Girls - returning fifty years later to the farm where they worked during the war. One woman was standing on the other's wheelchair, peering over the wall to get a good view of where they used to live. For me, that image captured the independent spirit and tenacity of the remarkable women who served in the Women's Land Army. I wanted to tell their stories.
I have always loved writing female characters, so creating the series was a dream come true. One rule I set myself on the TV series and in the books is that, if possible in the story, I didn't want the women to be saved by men. Instead, they would use their own ingenuity, courage and strength to get out of a tight corner - heroines of their own story, in every sense.
The novels continue the story of Connie, Joyce, Iris, Nancy, Annie and Bea after the BBC series ended. I've relished the opportunity to continue their stories. The novels stand by themselves, so if you haven't seen the series, I hope you will still enjoy meeting them and going back in time.
