The challenge of writing is providing the reader with both the vision the writer intends but the ability to embellish on that vision--to create a world within the reader's mind, rife with the experiences, visions, and characteristics they are familiar with. As an author, I can only provide the framework of a world and the story within it. I can venture into that world, and create an experience that the reader then fleshes out, makes theirs, and owns the outcomes. There is no world so strange as the one the reader visits, and none so evil they also do not understand. That evil is not the horror I can create. It is the world the reader brings into my story.
