Timsal Masud

I teach Hindi-Urdu language university classes, and I am a translator, editor, and textbook author. I

completed my Ph.D. at Lucknow University, where I studied trends in Urdu translations of Persian

short stories. A translator myself, I published Urdu translations of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The

Little Prince and Patrick Süskind’s The Story of  Mr. Sommer and other short stories and essays. I am the

author of Essential Urdu Dictionary (Hodder & Stoughton, 2015), a concise dictionary for Urdu learners,

and co-editor (with Syed Akbar Hyder) of Urdu-namah (City Press, 2020), a textbook for intermediate

and advanced Urdu.

My research has focused on the literature of Awadh, including the last king of Awadh Wajid Ali

Shah's literary works and the renowned marisya (elegy) poet Mir Anis's works. As part of an effort to

ensure Awadh's literature reaches a wider public, I am editing a series of books about Wajid Ali Shah

in Hindi. Two books from this series have been released: Lucknow Ka Shahi Stage (Aakhar Prakashan,

2019) and Sultan-e Alam Wajid Ali Shah (Aakhar Prakashan, 2022). I also edited a three-volume collection of

Mir Anis's most important poetry, Anis: 111 Marsiye (City Press, 2021).
