Edward Matthews Hunt (E.M. Hunt) was born in upstate New York. He started out as a catholic school kid in New Jersey, but his family traveled out west in 1978 after his dad saw "The Wilderness Family" one too many times.
The Hunt family built a geodesic dome, rode horses and made hay while the sun shined. After graduating from tiny Lyle High School, he worked his way through Washington State University as a newspaper writer and editor, as well as taking classified ads and driving the delivery truck on Saturdays. That lead to a career as a reporter, photographer and columnist for small town newspapers.
In 1997 he helped found the Tidepool.org news service and served as Editor in Chief until 2004. During that time, he created the proto-blog and newsletter the ebbTIDE.
Rather than lay off one of his reporters during the economic downturn, Hunt laid himself off and retrained as a Registered Nurse.
He has worked in oncology, but for the past 12 years he's specialized in emergency nursing. He lives with his wife of 25 years and two daughters on a small farm in Southwest Washington State.
He still is a regular columnist for two newspapers.
