Miguel A. Berlanga

Miguel Angel Berlanga PhD in Musicology and Ethnomusicology professor at the University of Granada, Spain. His publications deal with traditional Andalusian music and flamenco. His doctoral thesis was on fandangos and old dance parties: rituals and musical aspects, and various processes of change (flamenco fandangos and other revivals). This thesis awarded the First Prize for Research on Traditional Dance, sponsored by the University and Council of Malaga (1999), and part of it was published as Bailes de Candil Andaluces y Fiesta de Verdiales: otra visión de los fandangos (Málaga, 2000). Between 1998 and 2008 he conducted fieldwork on saetas and traditional Andalusian music of Holy Week. This research received in 2007 the "National Award for Research on Folklore" (CIOFF, Ministry of Culture of Spain) and published in 2009 as Polifonías y Otras Músicas de la Semana Santa Andaluza (Book + DVD).

He is currently researching on flamenco and Spanish dance, and Ibero-American music and its relations with a) traditional Spanish music b) dance music in the Spanish Baroque. c) African musics.
