Making Boring Fun

Trying to put an interesting spin on any topic has always been an interest. I have written dozens of articles for professional and trade publications, and made innumerable presentations in front of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of avid listeners. From writing a Star Trek themed article on investment regulation to using baseball analogies to try to wake up 700 people at an industry conference, I have always been able to interest an audience and yet get across the technical, sometimes boring, point I needed to make. Perhaps not on the NY Times bestseller list, my titles may sound more interesting than the content, but at least no one snoozes when they read them. Titles include: “WHERE NO (Hedge Fund) MAN (ager) HAS GONE BEFORE” with appropriate references to “Beaming me up Scotty” to avoid being photon torpedoed by some nasty Klingon regulator, and “On an Island With the SEC, (Aka Diary of an SEC Exam),” a Survivor based primer on why those Government dudes win every immunity challenge.

My non-writing career has spanned decades but my thirst for finding an interesting and entertaining outlet for my views has spanned a lifetime. Now I can go from writing about how to save your association by going “Back to the Future” at 1.21 jigawatts an hour to helping single guys in their 50s figure out there is life after divorce.

And what makes me an expert? Not reading psych books, not getting medical degrees, not interviewing thousands of women. How about two divorces, a retirement savings spent on therapy and dating a thousand women. Okay, not a thousand, but enough to know what works at this age, at this time. There is no substitute for experience.

Who Will Play Me in the Movie Version?

George Clooney is a now married, otherwise he would be at the top of the list of who plays me. But since he married a women 16 years his junior, I hope he reads my chapter on dating 30 somethings. It can be pretty awkward when you are the same age as your girlfriend’s parents (or your daughter is the same age as your girlfriend). And when you want to go home on a Saturday night, her friends are getting ready to go out.
