I left university in 1963 with a degree in English and, after short spells with Columbia Pictures and then BBC television, was happy working in regional repertory theatre directing plays. In 1968 I switched to teaching in higher education and stayed working in the university sector until the millenium when I retired from full-time teaching altogether.
Nowadays I really enjoy spending quiet time at my computer reflecting on some of the more memorable episodes that I was involved in at various stages of my life. I usually dwell longest on the ones which, for some reason or another, I found particularly baffling, confusing or unaccountable.
These periods of reflection can be productive in two ways, I think. They can help me to make sense of what was going on at the time and, if I get it right, they can provide the basis for a good story for old friends to enjoy - and new ones too.
