A local newspaper account dubbed me the “Modern Indiana Jones” due to some of my life experiences. Although I have experienced some unique things, I doubt that the good Dr. Jones has any need to fear being eclipsed.
Being fairly well-traveled I have been to many places and have resided in diverse places ranging from the suburban realm outside of New York City to the jungles of the Guyana highlands. In the latter location I was blessed to explore the beautiful wild realm with natives and learn about how they lived and some of their customs. A bona fide Amerindian blowgun, bows, and arrows hang just outside my office.
Off the coast of an obscure little island in Massachusetts I led on an archeological exploration seeking a possible clue to the location of Leif Eriksson’s Vinland. The inscribed stone bears the date of 1001. Working with the US Navy I was able to relocate the controversial stone. It was dismissed as a forgery a century earlier when initially seen and then forgotten. My research, however, found that the rationale for dismissing the inscription was in error on each count, thus warranting a closer look.
Aviation has always been an interest and I have flown in a great variety of aircraft ranging from private Beach Bonanzas (one of which crashed in South America) to venerable DC-3s (in the South American jungle – where else?) to spacious 747s bound for European adventures. In fact, I was in the cockpit of a Boeing 747 and helped to fire up its engines and systems while doing research for, Rough Ice. Flying with the US Navy’s Sea King helicopters during my work in Massachusetts was an awesome experience. So too was a trip into the Atlantic off the Virginia coast on board CVN-73, the USS George Washington, a nuclear aircraft carrier. Aside from witnessing air ops up close, I also got to visit the bridge while underway.
Writing professionally since I completed high school, my first published article was an Op-Ed for the New York Times. Other Op-Eds for the Times followed. So too did various articles on historical, aerospace and military topics. I have also written various user manuals and training materials for various companies. I pride myself on accuracy and strive to deliver quality work.
Rough Ice is my first book project. Several others are in various stages of development. Hope you enjoy!
