I am a solo attorney and the managing member of Thurston Law Offices LLC, which has its principal office in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I have been practicing law for almost 30 years. Thurston Law Offices focuses its practice on special education law, but also handles bankruptcy, family law, small business law, and civil litigation. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and my law degree from the Ohio State College of Law, where I was an editor of the Journal on Dispute Resolution. I have two teenage sons and a rescue dog named Maisey Blue.
I have always loved to write, but my inspiration for this book came from three things: (1) My grandfather and his passions for the law and writing; (2) my son’s diagnosis of Autism (Asperger’s Syndrome) and our own struggle through the tangled webs of special education law; and (3) the overwhelming need to educate the public on the rights and protections afforded our student children who have disabilities, but do so on a level the public can afford and understand. Thus, I wrote this book for people who don't have the resources to hire a lawyer to help them, but need to know their legal rights and ways to enforce them to help their child with a disability get the best education available.
