Karen J. Sperling was born and raised in Los Angeles and lived in New York City. She has been the author of published novels and a producer, writer and director of feature films. As a mother of her own and adopted children, she loved reading to her kids, yet felt there was another way to experience stories and to give kids an opportunity to participate in literary adventures.
She believed every child is a storyteller and an artist and set out to design a new genre of children’s books.
By breaking some rules, Invitational Books invites the child to not only read an original story, but also to interact with the adventure by having each child create the character, help to illustrate the book and to write their own story in the book.
Karen worked with Gerald McDermott, a three-time Caldecott winning illustrator, to capture the moment of the story on the page and mentor the young artist to join him in illustrating the book. This “invitational art” invites comprehension and completion and a partnership with the children to make a book together. These books become treasured keepsakes sharing with family, friends, teachers and school programs each child’s individual creative imagination.
Karen continues to write and after many years of studying alternative medicine is a master practitioner and teacher of energy medicine with a private practice while sharing workshops around the country.
