William King never won any literary awards, although the other students in his fifth grade class loved his comic strips in their student newspaper. He graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. None of this has anything to do with these stories. He started keeping a fishing journal in 1996 to preserve some information about the fishing trips he took. However, at some point, it evolved to include preserving memories of a lifetime of fishing. When he began writing, he had no idea that real life could turn into literature.
The information he was initially preserving was how to tie various flies, dates of fishing trips, locations, weather and stream conditions, what was caught, and with what flies. He also recorded who went with him and any other brief thoughts. After a while, he realized that reading these notes about old trips let him relive some good times. So with no literary background, experience, or even any specific encouragement, he vowed to continue this activity and actually write more stories. He has continued this practice for many years, and up to now, has only shared them with his family, friends, and a few other people that he could forcefully persuade to read them. However, he has been known to tell fishing stories of doubtful veracity to anyone within earshot.
The fishing stories within these covers are meant for the readers’ enjoyment, but he also wanted to leave a legacy to his children and grandchildren. He lives in a small town in Ohio with his wife of more than 40 years who puts up with all his fishing, rod building, fly tying, storytelling, and writing activities with love and good humor.
