J.D., LL.M., Kelli E. Brown

Kelli E. Brown has spent over twenty years practicing estate planning law. She is the chair of the Trusts and Estates Department at Goldberg Simpson LLC in Louisville, Kentucky. In the course of her work, she has run across a variety of situations that inspired her to write books on estate planning and probate.

Kelli noticed that her clients who had a loved one that struggled with addiction often believed that disinheriting the person (often an adult child) was the only option. This is not accurate. In fact, there are many ways for parents to develop an estate plan that would protect the addicted person from the self-harm that may occur with a lump sum inheritance. Such avenues come in all shapes, sizes, and price ranges. The important part is knowing the basics of what is available so that a family can make decisions that are best suited for their situation.

Kelli wrote "Estate Planning When You Have an Addicted Child" in order to provide estate planning information to help these families.

Brown received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton, her JD from the Northern Kentucky Chase College of Law, and her Master of Laws in Estate Planning from the University of Miami. She is active in the Kentucky Bar Association and received the Thomas B. Spain Award in 2015 for her service to the KBA. She is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and has passed bar exams in Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.

Brown lives in Kentucky with her husband, Walter, and children, Henry and Madeline.
