A. S. Balfour

I have been writing straight stage plays since the 1960s. I won second

prize in a National Play Competition for Pastoral in 1962. I produced and

directed The Crucible at the Palmers Green Theatre, which was voted best

amateur production of 1970. I won an Art Council Grant for my play Markus

Rex which was performed at The Centre for the Arts in Birmingham in 1977. The

Hokey Cokey Man was my last play, produced at The New End Theatre in

Hampstead. It was based on the life, loves and times of my grandfather, Al Tabor,

a society bandleader who wrote the Hokey Cokey during the war.

My interests lie in history especially Russian and German 19th and 20th

century and philosophy with particular reference to Martin Buber
