Wendy DeGroat

Wendy DeGroat’s poetry has appeared in U.S. and U.K. publications, including Beltway Poetry Quarterly, Common-place, Forage, Mslexia, Raleigh Review, and Rust + Moth.

Wendy grew up in the Appalachian foothills of northern New Jersey and western Virginia, and now lives in Richmond, where she works as a librarian, teaches writing workshops, and curates poetryriver.org, a resource site for documentary poetry and for diversifying the poetry taught in high school and undergraduate classrooms.

She also advocates for human equality, a passion she shares with her wife, Annette. Both volunteer with Living the Richmond Pledge, a workshop that empowers participants to take leadership in ending racism in their communities and in the broader culture.

Wendy is currently working on a manuscript about Grace Evelyn Arents (a Progressive Era educator and philanthropist who had a lasting impact on Richmond, Virginia), and Grace's companion in her later years, Mary Garland Smith.
