As a former athlete, Bruce has seen up close and personal how financial illiteracy claimed the riches of a few of his former teammates, and other prominent sports figures. He understands that their irresponsible and uninformed decisions will inevitably doom future generations to repeat the same mistakes. Bruce is also aware that this will continue to render his community incapable of wealth accumulation, or at the very least, the ability to attain financial security. After making several costly mistakes himself, he decided to pursue a deeper understanding of business, economics, and finance to stop what he has termed the Vicious Cycle of financial illiteracy.
Bruce is not evangelizing prosperity; as a financial expert, his focus is on the negative impact that bad financial practices have on a person and their family, generationally. His belief is that more people may know that they need to make better decisions about their finances, but they lack the mindset, discipline, and understanding to do so. This is why he authored the Vicious Cycle, and started a movement to improve financial literacy and to generate thought and conversation. Bruce believes people should not be, and do not want to be lectured and preached to about the decisions they should make, but would rather be coached, counseled, and assisted with coming up with the best decisions to make for their own situation.
Before the subprime financial meltdown, Bruce was a columnist for Al Punto, a Spanish/English magazine, where he wrote about the dangers and pitfalls of subprime mortgages and other predatory lending practices. In addition, he also hosted The Mortgage Minute, a radio segment that mirrored his column. During tax season, he partners with Citizens for Action, counseling low-income families on banking policies. Bruce continues his advocacy by serving on the community advisory board for HomeCorps, an organization that helps low-income families realize their dream of home ownership.
For more than a decade, Bruce has helped athletes, individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits reach their goals through financial education and coaching. He has lectured at Seton Hall University, the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Rutgers University, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). As a financial advocate and educator, Bruce is committed to providing everyone the knowledge, motivation, and support to not only build wealth, but sustain it.
