Gavin W. Henning

Gavin W. Henning, PhD, is one of higher education’s leading voices on equity-centered assessment, student belonging, and student success. He is Professor of Higher Education and founding Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship at New England College, where he also directs the Doctor of Education and Master of Science in Higher Education Administration programs. A past president of ACPA–College Student Educators International, the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), and founding president of Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL), Dr. Henning has nearly 30 years of experience advancing assessment and institutional research. He frequently consults with institutions and professional organizations and has delivered hundreds of keynote and invited presentations nationally and internationally. His publications include the best-selling Reframing Assessment to Center Equity (2022) and The Impact of Sense of Belonging in College (2022), as well as Student Affairs Assessment: Theory to Practice (2nd ed., 2024), and most recently, Maximizing the Impact of Assessment in Higher Education: Closing the Loop with Change Management (2025). His scholarship was honored with the NASPA George D. Kuh Award for Outstanding Contribution to Literature and Research, recognizing his national impact on higher education. Dr. Henning earned his PhD in Education Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of New Hampshire.
