Lia Rees lives in London. Since 2005, she has been living with an acquired brain injury. The memoir "But I'm Not Depressed" tells the story of its effects, and how it was labelled a mood disorder and mistreated for years.
Her experiences have left her sceptical of the medical system. She finds that the biopsychosocial model, today's recommended approach, harms patients whose symptoms lack clear clinical evidence. It sends them into the "mental health" backwater, treats them as deluded and irrational, and puts a lid on all further investigation. Lia is unusual in wanting to see more science and less "empathy" in medicine.
Her day job involves creating book covers and videos for authors. She also has ambitions for a science fantasy trilogy and a concept album.
