David Salch grew up in a small town in South Texas. The very early years were spent on dad's farm, but those became distant memories as the family moves to town in 1970. For thirty years, Dave learned the family business, launching and operating a half dozen different ventures through hid father's family business. These ranged from diesel mechanic to computer programming to sales to newspaper publishing to advertising to retail to appliance repair to photography, etc. In the early 1990's Dave moved his family to southern California to take part in the launching of the internet from the modest BBS world. But after twenty years of high tech executive living, he left it all behind to head to southern Oregon and start a small family farm.
The abuses and corruption of modern agriculture and factory farming became all too real as the layers of the onion unrolled to this "outsider". Facing several family health challenges, Dave became desperate to find a solution to health through proper nutrition from traditional farming. Dave adopted the "giants" such as Joel Salatin to educate him on how to do farming right. But there was still something missing... the ability to make a a decent profit.
Small farm would come and go, none seemed able to weather the storm of long term business, most offered products way below the price of production but still struggled to sell and supplemented that as long as possible through off farm income. The years of entrepreneurship screamed that the first step to sustainability is profit, without which ever venture eventually fails.
So the idea of a farm model was born. Not only was it necessary to figure out what farm model could make a profit, but there must be a mechanism to share that knowledge with new inspired farmers before they meet with failure. Thus David devoted several years to developing a truly sustainable farm model that produces both a profit and exceptionally nutritious food, and a mechanism to share that.
The book series being launched now - Save the Children: Restoring Health Through Grandpa's Farm is the encapsulation of this model. The goal is to see ten thousand new farms launched utilizing this model to fundamentally change the food system of america from the ground up. Not by complaining about the bad and proving how bad it is, but by showing how it CAN be done right.
This is the mission that David is committed to, to save the children, the next generation, but showing this generation how to feed them.
