Luke Amadeus Ranieri was raised in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The beauty of the countryside guaranteed his fascination with nature, which inspired him to pursue geology and planetary sciences. His other great inspiration has come from his artist father, whose affection for classical music, Italian language, and Greco-Roman art and architecture encouraged Ranieri to travel to Florence to study. This precipitated his learning of many foreign languages, including Latin, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Greek, and Italian, many of which he teaches.
As space and aviation intrigue him most, he has also pursued a career as a military pilot, and has ratings in the TH-67 Creek, OH-58A/C Kiowa, and UH-60A/L Black Hawk helicopters.
