Joy Sylvia

Joy Sylvia lives in Timaru, New Zealand, and is a former social worker turned full time author. She has three published non-fiction books, and one young teen adventure based fiction - which was pure fun to write!

Joy has worked in Corrections', mental health establishments, been attached to the NZ Defence Force - YDU, and worked with numerous NGO’s in NZ and Australia.

Born in England and brought up in the back-end of Kilburn, London, Joy spent the first eight years of her life as a state ward in a children’s home (Prenton), before being reunited with her parents. Her mother was a Humanist, her father a Jewish, non-English speaking (initially), refugee who dabbled in ‘cold war’ espionage. Child and teenhood were a harsh reality for Joy. She became a migrant herself, eventually ‘fetching’ up in New Zealand. Add to this her involvement with environmental and civil rights activism and you begin to understand her ability to weave a good yarn.

Joy is particularly enjoying the ability to weave narrative that can, surreptitiously, assist teens deal with anxiety and gain greater resiliency.

Joy has two adult children, plus two grandsons, all avid readers.
