Joe Devinny has a B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry, and a Ph.D. from Caltech in Environmental Engineering Science, and has spent 35 years as a professor of environmental engineering. He coauthored two engineering reference books and over 120 technical articles and conference papers. His speculations about future technology are thus realistically grounded in a broad knowledge of present science and engineering. Still, he recognizes the potential for fiction. “It’s a lot easier to make science fiction interesting and fun,” he says, “because you can just make stuff up. Those stuffy old journals wouldn’t let me do that.”
