I am retired and live in Dublin, Ireland.

I have always been interested in the American Civil War. The book arose from a brief sentence in the famous Civil War diary by Mary Chesnut. She makes passing reference to an Irish nanny named Catherine. In attempting to track down who Catherine was, an amazing story began to emerge. My research was largely carried out from original sources; contemporary newspapers, journals, reports, memoirs, etc. (much of which is available free thru the wonderful Gutenberg Project).
