André van der Hoek was born in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, the Netherlands, where he grew up until he moved to Boulder, CO in 1993 for a one-year exchange project as part of his undergraduate studies. Inevitably, the 'visit' was extended, and he ended up completing his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder before joining UC Irvine as a professor of Informatics where he still works today.
André considers himself a programmer at heart, and loves talking to and working with software designers and developers to create new tools that help them be more effective and efficient. He misses ice skating, but still hops on the road bike regularly to churn some miles.
