Brit Chism

"Juana Diego and the Roses--Short Stories" is Mr. Chism's second book of stories about women protagonists. They face gender discrimination, glass ceilings, patriarchy, outdated social mores, unfaithful spouses, trafficking, and assault, problems which she must struggle with and either overcome or succumb. Her own strengths and resources are her tools. There is no Prince Charming, or Superhero to rescue her, and happily-ever-after is often a misrepresentation.

The author's goal is to create interesting stories based on ancient myths (Medea, Mnemosyne, Jocasta of the Oedipus myth, Phanes, Eurydice, Electra) which are analyzed for power structure and re-set in the 21st century--New Orleans, Colorado, Ukraine, Atlanta, Croatia, Mexico, or other places. Each is short enough to be read during a commute.

Brit Chism holds two bachelor's degrees, English and Registered Professional Nursing. Three of these stories have been published in literary journals--Lay This Burden Down, Shade in Spring, and Layla and the Rage.

After, at least, two other careers (cooking in commercial kitchens, including on tugboats in the oilfields of the Gulf of Mexico, and registered nursing with traveling nurses agencies) the author finds himself well into Act III of his life. He enjoys a third career--writing short stories for well-educated, literate people who like to read.

When he isn't writing stories, the author can be found exploring the Pacific Coast of Ecuador.
