Paper Mache 1917 is a book for all seasons written in simple prose. The novel combines storytelling and poetry woven around timeless musical themes of love and hate, tragedy and redemption. Its unique style offers a fresh look at the revolutionary forces before and after the Russian Revolution in 1917 and the events that reignited the conflict starting the second World War.

The story opens in 1905 and follows the lives of Johan Wagner, a radio specialist in the German Wehrmacht and Rosa Kautsky, a Polish born pianist and translator. Their unlikely love story is written to the three part music of Beethoven’s 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2 and Chopin’s Ballade 4 op52. The telling performs a delicate dance between the meta and macro of people and places in a complex time — against the backdrop of the two major ideologies of the 20th century: the rise of German National Socialism and Soviet Communism.

The work is grounded in historical fact and contains original poetic translations and philosophical insights. In all cases original translations are included to capture the creative forces of writers like Marina Tsvetaeva, Goethe and Rimbaud — voices not often heard in the West.
