Walter Blaire writes science fiction stories that take place on the colony world of Grigory IV, a forsaken and overlooked corner of the vast Haphan Empire. The planet is a poisoned world, thronging with a human populace that had been genetically twisted into soldiers for now-forgotten interstellar war.

Generation after generation, this genetic programming has gone bad, and now the cheerful, unstable, and violent "Polluted" soldiers fight on both sides—as servitors protecting the empire's colony on the planet, and as a free people trying to tear the colony down.

The result is the Haphan Empire's magnificent project, its main defense against the world, and its cynical method of population control: the Eternal Front. The front is 1,000 miles of trenches, barbed wire, and repeater rifles. It's a trench war that has now run for 100 years, creating untold suffering and accounting for millions of lives.

The "Lines of Thunder" books chronicle the events that decide the fate of the empire's colony, and finally bring the savage trench war to a close.
