I have always been an avid reader of the fantasy genre, even as I grew up and joined the real world with a doctorate in biomedical engineering. One of the things that struck me as I put words to laptop in the late hours of the night were the similarities between creative writing and innovation. I think my work as an engineer has made me into a writer with a unique perspective on the fantasy genre, and I actually think writing makes me into a better inventor. It constantly pushes me to think of things in ways from different angles and to challenge things I thought I knew as either an engineer or a writer. I hope it pushes you to think of the world around you differently as you read my books as well.
My goal as an author is to write the type of books that I like to read. I don’t believe the good guys need to wear a cape and that the bad guys are inherently bad or will always choose the side of evil. I believe some good can come out of the most surprising of circumstances and that a group of people with an inherently good goal can ultimately be led astray through a series of seemingly correct choices. I think people are all try to do the right thing, but for their own purposes or based on their own perspective, especially when people are faced with morally grey situations. I love to create these complex situations in my books and to try to surprise you with the outcome.
I also hate it when fantasy authors jump from one character to the next on any given chapter (with the exception of Brandon Sanderson-that guy can write anything and get away with it) because I think it takes away from the depth in which the reader can get to know a character and creates a more halting experience for the reader. You’ll see in my books that I’ve tried something a bit different. Each book in this series is sequentially told, but the main character shifts from book to book. My hope is that by the fourth book, you will know these characters like an old friend while still getting to know the Blood Mage. By the time I’m done, I hope you feel conflicted, surprised and utterly satisfied that the outcome was there to see the whole time, if you only knew to look. Thanks for reading my fractal-forsaken books!
