Joan Fleiss Kaplan was a Masters of Special Education teacher for twenty-seven years in Malden, Massachusetts, teaching students in grades 1–7. In 2008, she authored The Primary Phonics Intervention Guide 1–6 and an accompanying set of blackline masters, published by Educators Publishing Service in Cambridge, MA. Following that, she authored ten decodable storybooks, Set 6, for the Primary Phonics reading series. These engaging storylines focus on explicitly taught phonetic elements that enable struggling readers to learn decoding skills through visual, auditory and hands-on learning to gain reading mastery. Joan has taught and is certified in learning disabilities, severe behavioral disorders and elementary education. She is also trained in the Orton-Gillingham reading method, Wilson Reading System, and Project Read. She has been a special education instructor in the graduate school at Lesley College in Cambridge, MA. Prior to her educational endeavors, she did social work for the Children's Protective Service in Brockton, MA.
