Until 2014, Fifties born Bob was more a reader than a writer, Dickens, Pepys, Military history and Ancestral research among many subjects, but he was always adding to the notes for a book. Their adult children having left the family home, there was time for him and his wife to plan for travelling when they retired.

Recently in Britain, the age rules for women were adjusted, meaning his wife would have to work until she was sixty six years old!! And now retire after him. Bad news, and this meant a change in circumstances. So it was decided that a travel venture would be brought forward. Christine, his wife, a teacher, obtained a sabbatical from her job, and a five month around the World trip was planned, then undertaken in 2015. They both kept extensive journals and the diary notes became the basis for his first book. Help from New Generation Publishing saw ‘The Olds Abroad’ released in June 2016.

A Facebook group page is open, called 'The Olds Abroad' book of the diary, for readers and those just interested in travel, to comment, discuss and also enabling the published black & white photographs to be seen in colour.
