Joao Silva

Joćo Silva was born in Lisbon, where the sights and sounds of the city were part of his upbringing. He studied classical piano and musicology, and holds a Ph.D in Music from Newcastle University. His research is focused on popular entertainment in Portugal in the late nineteenth century. Music, theater, sound recordings, cinema, and urban planning became part of a particular negotiation of modernity that linked Lisbon with cities such as Paris, Rio de Janeiro, or Madrid.
