James Barrie

James Barrie was born in Beverley, East Yorkshire. He studied at Leeds University before spending five years overseas, teaching English and working as a technical editor. Since 1998 he has lived in York.

In May 2012, he began writing The York Cat Crime Mysteries, a series of three books featuring feline sleuth Theodore. 'The First of Nine: The Case of the Clementhorpe Killer' was published in 2016, the sequel 'Rear Garden, or The Cat Who Knew Too Much' in 2018 and 'The Call of the Cat Basket' in 2019.

In 2022, 'The Naked Orientalist: The Turkish Life of French Sailor and Writer Pierre Loti' was published, a novel based on the author's own time living and working in Istanbul and the adventures that Pierre Loti got up to in Constantinople a hundred years earlier.

His latest book is a murder mystery set in a bookshop in York.
