Ben Buchanan

Ben Buchanan is a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. He served from 2021-2025 in the White House, including as the White House Special Advisor on AI and as Director for Technology and National Security on the National Security Council. Prior to joining the White House, he was a professor at Georgetown University and a Senior Faculty Fellow at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology. He is the author of three books, The New Fire (MIT Press, 2022), The Hacker and the State (Harvard University Press, 2020) and The Cybersecurity Dilemma (Oxford University Press, 2017). Ben received his PhD in War Studies from King’s College London, where he was a Marshall Scholar. He earned masters and undergraduate degrees from Georgetown University.
