Kit Norris, distinguished educator, consultant and author currently focuses on supporting teacher teams as they implement best practices in mathematics. As a former mathematics educator, administrator, and supervisor, she understands that teacher collaboration serves as a vehicle for improved student achievement and building teacher’s capacities.
Kit began her career in middle school in Deerfield, MA as teacher, coach and eventually department chair. She moved to eastern Massachusetts and served as the Director of the Academic Program. She was awarded the Klingenstein Fellowship in 1998 to study at Educational Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University. This opportunity launched her interest in urban education and she sought ways to have a greater impact beyond her own school. She transitioned to mathematics consulting in 2000 working in local districts to increase student engagement and implement NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
Currently, Kit works with districts around the country to implement the Common Core Standards or state standards. By highlighting the mathematical practices, focusing on common assessments and the resulting data, Kit guides teacher teams to use formative strategies to improve student learning.
Kit is a frequent speaker at national, regional and local conferences, and she has
served on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics. She has coauthored several works including NCSM’s Great Tasks resources. Kit also participates actively in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served on the program committee for the national meeting in Boston, 2015.
Kit was honored to receive the 1994 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics and Science and she was inducted into the Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame in Massachusetts in 2015.
